The Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival
The Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival is a festival that spans over forty-six years of Toronto’s history. The various events and live musical performances from some of the Caribbean’s top artists, lead up to the main closing attraction which is an all-out Grand Parade. This parade is a battle of movement and creativity, as large groups of costumed Masquerade Bands dance to the percussion of the live steel pan, calypso, reggae, and soca music. The Carnival centres on the theme of pride and diversity and encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate the Caribbean heritage.
This was a creative concept for Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival. This was a fun project to put together. The project focused on creating promotional items that conveyed the feeling of the warmth of the summer months but still embodied the creativity and vibrancy of the costumes worn by masqueraders during the main parade. The challenge was finding a new way to represent the parade that did not involve the use of photography alone to showcase the intricacies of the costumes. I organized a photoshoot with a friend and took pictures of her in her costumes then proceeded to transform her into this beautiful illustrated goddess. I created a pamphlet with the event dates and time, passes for the staff and posters to promote the event. My favourite part is that the pamphlet come together to finish her face when stacked back to front.
